The Eric Gelly Estate is a hidden gem of the Languedoc wine region in the south of France. This family-run establishment sprawls over nearly 70 hectares, with origins stretching back over a century, imprinting an irreplaceable depth and history into every bottle produced. The site's clay-limestone soil offers a variety of vineyards mainly comprised of regional grape varieties, such as Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, and Merlot. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the Eric Gelly Estate: from the vineyard itself, carefully maintained by hand, to the winemaking process, where the pure expression of the fruit is encouraged in every cuvée. The estate regularly garners numerous awards that attest to this excellence, including several gold medals. At the heart of this enterprise is Eric Gelly, the latest generation of a lineage of dedicated winemakers. He took over the operation in 2006 and instills his modern and innovative approach to traditional winemaking. Respect for the environment is also crucial for Eric, who practices sustainable viticulture and has implemented numerous processes to minimize the estate's impact on the environment. The vineyards of the Eric Gelly Estate are nestled in the picturesque hills of the Languedoc, offering incredible panoramic views and a land whose nutritional richness contributes to the exceptional quality of the wines. The location benefits from an ideal Mediterranean climate for viticulture, with mild winters, hot summers, and a strong maritime influence that promotes the balanced ripening of the grapes. When tasting the wines of the Eric Gelly Estate, expect fruity notes, roundness, power, and a beautiful length on the palate.

Discovering the wine region of Languedoc

Languedoc (formerly Coteaux du Languedoc) is a key appellation used in the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region of southern France. It covers Dry table wines of all three colors (red, white and rosé) from the entire region, but leaves Sweet and Sparkling wines to other more specialized appellations. About 75% of all Languedoc wines are red, with the remaining 25% split roughly down the middle between whites and rosés. The appellation covers most of the Languedoc region and almost a third of all the vineyards in France.

The typical Languedoc red wine is medium-bodied and Fruity. The best examples are slightly heavier and have darker, more savoury aromas, with notes of spice, undergrowth and leather. The Grape varieties used to make them are the classic southern French ones: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, often with a touch of Carignan or Cinsaut. The white wines of the appellation are made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Bourboulenc, with occasional use of Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne from the Rhône Valley.

Discover the grape variety: White muscat

White muscat is a white grape variety of Greek origin. Present in several Mediterranean vineyards, it has several synonyms such as muscat de Die, muscat blanc and frontignac. In France, it occupies a little less than 7,000 ha out of a total of 45,000 ha worldwide. Its young shoots are downy. Its youngest leaves are shiny, bronzed and scabrous. The berries and bunches of this variety are all medium-sized. The flesh of the berries is juicy, sweet and firm. Muscat à petits grains has a second ripening period and buds early in the year. It is moderately vigorous and must be pruned short. It likes poor, stony slopes. This variety is often exposed to spring frosts. It fears mildew, wasps, grape worms, court-noué, grey rot and powdery mildew. Muscat à petits grains is used to make rosé wines and dry white wines. Orange, brown sugar, barley sugar and raisins are the known aromas of these wines.

Discover the grape variety: Vermentino

The vermentino grape variety was widespread in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica. Today, Vermentino is grown in the regions bordering the Mediterranean, mainly in Provence (Côtes de Provence, Bellet), Corsica (Corse Calvi), Languedoc (Côtes du Roussillon, Costières de Nîmes) and the Rhône Valley (Côtes du Luberon). Because it ripens late, Vermentino requires a warm climate for its development and can only be grown in regions with good sun exposure. Conversely, cold or temperate climates do not allow it to ripen properly. Vermentino is only susceptible to powdery mildew. When vinified on its own, Vermentino produces a single-variety dry white wine that is light and full-bodied with a pale yellow color. It can also be blended with other grape varieties such as Ugni Blanc, Cinsault and Grenache, in which case its low acidity makes it light and fresh. Vermentino belongs to the grape varieties of Ajaccio, Corsica and Corbières. The aromas released by this variety are multiple. One can detect notes of fresh apple, green almond, sweet spices, hawthorn, ripe pear and fresh pineapple.
