Discovering the wine region of Provence

Provence is a wine region in the far southeast of France, best known for the quality (and quantity) of its rosé wines and for its Warm, mild Climate. The modernization that is taking place in many of the traditional wine regions of southern France has not yet taken place to the same extent in Provence, but there are Clear signs of change. The region's Grape varieties, in particular, have come under scrutiny in recent decades. Traditional varieties such as Carignan, Barbaroux (Barbarossa from Sardinia) and Calitor are being replaced by more commercially viable varieties such as Grenache, Syrah and even Cabernet Sauvignon.

The term "Varietal improvers" is gaining ground in Provence, as it is in the neighbouring Languedoc-Roussillon. The most successful local varieties, Mourvèdre, Tibouren and Vermentino (known locally as Rolle), have remained in favor, proving their value in Provence wines, in red, rosé and white respectively. The Vineyards of Provence cover an area of France's southeastern coastline that measures about 200 kilometers from east to west. In this definitely Mediterranean climate - no Provencal vineyard is more than 55 km from the Mediterranean - the vines enjoy about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, as well as an average annual temperature of 14.

5°C.

Bordeaux 2022: The en primeur experience

I started to write my thoughts on the vintage as the dust settled from the annual primeur’s week (or month in my case) and when my teeth and lips had finally lost their purple hue – an unsightly image I documented once on Instagram. This year more than 7,000 eager wine tasters were welcomed onto the red carpets of various historic châteaux buildings, past manicured gardens and into beautifully decorated tasting rooms to taste the new batch of baby wines before tucking into lavish spreads, often ...

DWWA 2023 Platinum: The 97 point wines to seek out now

‘Platinum is very hard-fought’ says co-chair Sarah Jane Evans MW. ‘It’s like something in the Premier League’, she adds, ‘but getting there means it’s going to be something special.’ The Decanter World Wine Awards judging process for Platinum begins after a meticulous first round of tasting, where all entries – this year a record 18,250 – are examined by regional specialists to determine Bronze, Silver, Gold or no award. All wines awarded 95 points (a Gold med ...

Walls: Alexandre Fréguin interview, wine director of L’Oustalet

It’s 11.00am on a July day and it’s already hot in Gigondas. The cicadas are trilling in the plane trees that shade the village square. A busy day is looming for Alexandre Fréguin but he remains unfazed, looking relaxed in a smart shirt and sandals. Underneath the calm exterior however there’s a single-minded determination that would put the Terminator to shame. At just 34, he’s achieved more than most sommeliers manage in a lifetime. Fréguin oversees the drinks program across the network of res ...

The word of the wine: Serious

A Bordeaux term for small pebbles from the Pyrenees, eroded, rounded and transported by the Garonne to Aquitaine. They are mainly found on the left bank in the area.... known as the Graves, and further downstream in the Médoc. By extension, gravel is found in other regions, brought by other rivers or even glaciers.
