The wine region of Palette
Tiny Provençal AOC (1948) near Aix-en-Provence, on calcareous scree slopes of Langesse in a sheltered cirque. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Cinsault (≥80%) as signature reds and rosés: rich notes of red fruits, garrigue, spices, leather and balsamic touch, firm tannins and warm mouthfeel. Rare Clairette-based white (≥55%): floral, honey, almond, white truffle, anise and evolving balsamic touch, excellent for ageing. Legendary Château Simone.
The wine region of Provence
World capital of dry, refined rosé (~90% of production). Pale rose-petal colour, delicate nose of fresh red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant), citrus (pink grapefruit), white flowers and a mineral touch, taut and thirst-quenching palate — the Mediterranean aperitif par excellence. Blends of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Tibouren and Mourvèdre. Fleshy Bandol reds from Mourvèdre (leather, garrigue, age-worthy), straight Cassis whites.
The word of the wine: Dame-jeanne
Large bottle or wicker-clad carboy used to transport wine and store old spirits before blending.
