Nestled in the heart of the French winemaking region of Mâconnais, the Château Chasselas estate offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and modernity. Spanning over 12 hectares, the vineyard is tucked away in the picturesque village of Chasselas, from which it draws its name. The orderly rows of vines are a testament to the precision viticulture practiced here, and the majestic château dominates the landscape with regal grace. Château Chasselas produces a variety of wines, ranging from fruity and light whites to bold and complex reds. The use of traditional methods coupled with modern innovation is key to the consistent quality of their wines. Emphasis is placed on promoting sustainable farming and preserving the exceptional terroir of the Mâconnais region for future generations. The soil of the estate is a unique mix of limestone and clay, contributing to a distinct mineral structure in the wines produced. The vines average 45 years old and benefit from a full south-facing exposure, allowing them to capture the maximum sunlight. Harvesting is carried out by hand, ensuring only the finest grapes are selected. The richness and diversity of wines produced at Château Chasselas reflect the winemaking heritage of the Mâconnais region. The estate's eponymous white wine, Chasselas, is a light and fresh wine, while the red Gamay is a meaty and vigorous wine. In addition to single-varietal wines, the estate also produces complex blends that highlight the finesse and balance of the different grape varieties. Visitors to Château Chasselas are welcomed by the warm and authentic hospitality of the region.

Discovering the wine region of Mâconnais

The Mâconnais wine region in Southern Burgundy is centred on the provincial town of Mâcon, from which it takes its name. The region produces a considerable amount of wine, specializing in white wines made from Chardonnay and a smaller number of red wines made from Pinot Noir and Gamay. Unlike the Côte d'Or to the North, where a band of densely planted vines runs roughly north-south across the countryside, the vineyards of the Mâconnais are more sparsely planted and interspersed with land devoted to other forms of agriculture. The landscape here is made up of rolling limestone hills, bordered to the east by the Saône River, which flows south to join the Rhône just outside Lyon.

The Climate of the Mâconnais shows signs of its proximity to the Rhône valley, with higher than average temperatures, lower rainfall and - perhaps most importantly - less risk of vine-damaging spring frosts. The southern end of the Mâconnais slightly overlaps the northern boundary of Beaujolais - itself officially Part of the Burgundy wine region, but often treated as a separate region. The title Mâcon covers white, red and rosé wines from the entire region. A number of communes within the appellation's catchment area have been recognized as sources of premium wines and may add their names to the appellation; for example, Mâcon Lugny.

Discover the grape variety: Roussanne

Roussane is a white grape variety, planted on an area of more than 700 ha. Originally from Montélimar, it is also found in Savoie, Languedoc and Roussillon, and grows very well in calcareous, poor, stony soil. It prefers to be pruned short. Roussane is also called fromenteau, barbin or bergeron. The young leaves are bubbled with fine down. When adult, they become thicker. It flowers in June and matures in mid-September. The grapes are cylindrical in shape, the berries are small and turn red when ripe, and the wine produced from pure Roussane is of extraordinary quality. It has a delicate aroma reminiscent of coffee, honeysuckle, iris and peony. The taste of this wine improves with age. It is part of the blend of the appellations Vin-de-Savoie, Côtes-du-Vallée du Rhône or Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
