Discovering the wine region of Galice

Galicia is one of the 17 first-level administrative regions (called comunidades autónomas) of Spain. It occupies the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, and is exposed on two sides to the Atlantic Ocean. To the South is Portugal, to the east Castilla y Leon. Viticulture has a Long tradition in Galicia, introduced to the region by the ancient Romans and continued by monks throughout the Middle Ages.

Today, Galicia is best known for its Rias Baixas wines - crisp, Aromatic whites made mainly from Albarino. Galician wines bear striking similarities to those of Minho (notably Vinho Verde), just across the border in Portugal. Shaped by the waves and winds of the Atlantic, the Galician coastline is spectacular; steep cliffs alternate with coastal coves called rías. The interior of the region is characterized by Green hills that rise gently eastward toward the Cantabrian Mountains, reaching heights of 2,000 metres (6,600 feet).

Discover the grape variety: Rousse

It is said to have originated in the Vallée du Gier, south-west of Lyon, and is found only in this region, like the Mornen, with which it has long been associated. It disappeared from the vineyard a long time ago, but is currently being recognized thanks to the association for the restoration and development of the Coteaux du Gier vineyard (A.R.D.V.C.G). A few vines still remain in a mixture in very old plots.

Stephen Brook: ‘It is astonishing how rapidly changes can take place in the Bordeaux region’

My book The Complete Bordeaux, which has been revised every five years, is soon to be published in its fourth edition. This may seem like excessive haste, given the scope of the book, but it is astonishing how rapidly changes can take place in the region. Burgundy, in contrast, is relatively stable, since most properties are family-owned and tend to stay that way. But not so in Bordeaux, where there are ample opportunities for newcomers to acquire established properties, as they have been doing ...

Ten years on: Chinese wine’s breakthrough moment at DWWA

The prestige attached to winning at the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) means that being awarded a Bronze medal for some wineries will mean huge celebrations in China, Japan, India, or Thailand. Since the competition began in 2004, I have often reminded judges on my panel about this – whether they are journalists, sommeliers, educators, Masters of Wine or Master Sommeliers. Scroll down for new tasting notes and scores on Jia Bei Lan vintages: from the Chinese wine label that won big at DWWA 20 ...

Fires near Bordeaux: Liber Pater vineyard evacuated

Police ordered the evacuation of more local residents in the Landiras area yesterday (Monday 18 July), with Liber Pater’s vineyard in Graves also evacuated as firefighters continued to try to contain a large forest fire that has been burning for the past week. A ‘fog’ of fire smoke behind Liber Pater vines on Tuesday morning (19 July), said owner Loïc Pasquet, who was briefly able to return to the site. Smoke hasn’t been a problem so far, he said.
