The Pegasus Bay Estate is an exceptional wine spectacle located in Waipara, in the Canterbury wine region of New Zealand. It spreads over about 70 hectares of lush land, where richly cultivated vineyards flourish under the temperate climate. The magnificent landscape, dominated by the serene presence of the Torlesse mountains to the west, offers a breathtaking panorama. The estate was founded by the couple Ivan and Christine Donaldson, both passionate about oenology. Since the 1970s, Pegasus Bay Estate is a family story dedicated to the production of high-quality wines, marked by the uniqueness of their terroir. Besides, it is the whole family involved in the wine operation that contributes to the maintenance and continuation of these values. The majority of the vines planted are Pinot Noir and Riesling grape varieties, followed by Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and other varieties. The Donaldsons place great importance on environmentally respectful viticulture. They practice natural viticulture as much as possible, avoiding artificial irrigation and pesticides, and promoting biodiversity within their vineyards. Due to the climatic conditions of this region, characterized by warm days and cool nights, the wines produced at Pegasus Bay Estate are recognized for their aromatic intensity. The gravel and clay soils in which the vines are planted also bring a certain complexity to their wines, some of which are internationally awarded. The estate also has a gourmet restaurant, where visitors can enjoy excellent wines accompanied by refined dishes.

The word of the wine: Rootstock

American vine on which a French vine is grafted. This is the consequence of the phylloxera that destroyed the vineyard at the end of the 19th century: after much trial and error, it was discovered that the "pest" spared the roots of the American vines, and the technique became widespread.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot gris

Pinot Gris is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir. It has its origins in Burgundy, where it is called pinot-beurot in reference to the colour of the grey robes worn by the monks of the region. Established in Alsace since the 17th century, pinot gris was called tokay until 2007. It is made up of bunches of small berries that vary in colour from pink to blue-grey. It is particularly well suited to the continental climate because it is resistant to the cold in winter and to spring frosts. This variety also likes dry limestone soils with plenty of sunshine in the summer. Pinot Gris is well suited to late harvesting or to the selection of noble grapes, depending on the year and the concentration of sugars in the berries. Pinot Gris wines are distinguished by their aromatic complexity of white fruits, mushrooms, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, etc., and their great finesse. In the Loire Valley, pinot gris is used in the Coteaux-d'Ancenis appellations. It gives dry or sweet wines with pear and peach aromas.
