The Main Divide Estate is a prestigious vineyard located in the picturesque wine region of Waipara, on the South Island of New Zealand. With the majestic Main Divide mountains as a backdrop, the estate boasts about 40 hectares of sun-soaked vineyards, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the Waipara Valley. The soil of the Main Divide Estate, shaped by millennia of glacial and river deposits, is nutrient-rich, giving the grapes a distinct taste intensity. Coupled with a climate favorable for viticulture, characterized by cool winters and hot summers, this unique terroir promotes the growth of various grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The aim of the Main Divide Estate is to produce wines that faithfully reflect the character of their terroir. To this end, the estate employs sustainable viticultural methods, starting with reasoned cultivating practices, aimed at respecting the natural balances of the vine. The harvest is done by hand, allowing the selection of the best grapes, and preserving their integrity until they reach the winery. In terms of winemaking, the Main Divide Estate combines tradition with modern technology. The grapes are gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness and fruit purity. Red wines are aged in oak barrels to achieve an elegant tannic structure and aromatic complexity. Over the years, the Main Divide Estate has earned international recognition for the excellence of its wines. These are appreciated for their aromatic intensity, their perfect balance between acidity and minerality, and their ageing potential.

The word of the wine: Pinot meunier

Cultivated in the 19th century in all the northern vineyards, this black grape variety has largely regressed since. Very present in the Marne valley, it constitutes a third of the vineyards in Champagne, alongside pinot noir and chardonnay with which it is often blended. It brings roundness and red and yellow fruit aromas to champagnes. Pinot meunier is also the dominant grape variety in red and rosé wines in the Orleans AOC and the rare Touraine-Noble-Joué, a grey wine. Syn.: meunier.

Discover the grape variety: Cabernet franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest red grape varieties in Bordeaux. The Libourne region is its terroir where it develops best. The terroirs of Saint-Emilion and Fronsac allow it to mature and develop its best range of aromas. It is also the majority in many blends. The very famous Château Cheval Blanc, for example, uses 60% Cabernet Franc. The wines produced with Cabernet Franc are medium in colour with fine tannins and subtle aromas of small red fruits and spices. When blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it brings complexity and a bouquet of aromas to the wine. It produces fruity wines that can be drunk quite quickly, but whose great vintages can be kept for a long time. It is an earlier grape variety than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means that it is planted as far north as the Loire Valley. In Anjou, it is also used to make sweet rosé wines. Cabernet Franc is now used in some twenty countries in Europe and throughout the world.
