Discovering the wine region of Atlantique

The regional name of Vin de pays de l'Atlantique exists since 2006. For red, rosé and white wines, it brings together 76 producer and Cellar members in Gironde, Dordogne and other departments of Poitou and Aquitaine, for a production of 39. 500 hectolitres of wine, 62% of which is red wine. This denomination is a complement of range of the AOC of Bordeaux.

The great terroirs of the South West of France benefit from a Warm and humid Climate which refreshes the vines and gives them the strong Flavours of the lands of Aquitaine and the lands of the Arrière Pays such as the Périgord. The Grape varieties for the reds and rosés are mainly Merlot, cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and for the whites Chardonnay, destined for single-variety vintages. They are bouquets of Spicy and round flavours, with hints of acidic red fruits for the reds and rosés, and floral and vanilla aromas for the whites. The success of this appellation wine is due to the creativity of the producers who have put together 76 labels that invite you to travel.

Discover the grape variety: Colombard

Colombard is one of the oldest grape varieties in the Charentes. This golden white grape variety is a cross between Chenin and Gouais. The young leaves of colombard are yellow with bronze patches. The adult leaves may be three-lobed or whole, depending on the variety. Its branches are cottony. The bunches of this variety are thick and cylindrical. Its elliptical berries are medium-sized. They change color until they ripen, ranging from greenish white to golden yellow. Colombard is associated with an average budding. It is particularly susceptible to leafhoppers, grape worms, mites, mildew, powdery mildew and gray mold. It is also sensitive to water stress, but is not very sensitive to wind. A perfect pairing: Flatbread and cod roe emulsion

My father worked in the wholesale supply of fruit and vegetables. He would often come home with a box of the day’s best produce, and so I became interested in what was in season. Both my parents often worked late, so cooking dinner to help take some weight off them inspired me to want to learn more. My first kitchen job at age 14 was at a Greek restaurant in Southampton, and it inspired my love for foods of the eastern Mediterranean. Today, I’m lucky to be able to obtain the best produce from ‘O ...

My life and job as a personal wine consultant

Tongue firmly in cheek, I sometimes define ‘wine consultant’ as ‘someone lacking employment who will work for whoever pays them’. Although meant in jest, the implied question is valid: just what does a wine consultant do? More importantly, in this age, when every assistant in a retail shop styles him- or herself a sales consultant, who would hire one? The short answer is this: a wine consultant is someone who advises wine lovers about their passion. He or she advises buyers on what to buy (and a ...
