The Château Magnan La Gaffelière is one of the most renowned vineyards of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. Located on the left bank of the Dordogne, this estate is about 10 kilometers west of Libourne. Founded by Rose de Gaffelière Lord, the domain is now owned by the Lagneau family. The estate comprises 17 hectares of vineyards, most of which are planted on clay-limestone soils that are generally young and rather shallow. The vineyards are diverted to microclimates that allow the cultivation of a variety of red grape varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are blended according to the years and weather conditions. The grapes are handpicked then destemmed and sorted in the cellar. The maturing then follows, in vats and oak barrels at different levels of each of the grape varieties to elaborate the final batches. Once ready, the wine is bottled for a precise evolution according to tasting and the homogeneity criteria of the Château. Château Magnan La Gaffelière produces unique wines that showcase the exceptional and unique character of the terroir. The wines have intense, complex and deep aromas and flavors that are both fruity and elegant, and are often regarded as "the quintessence of Saint-Emilion". The estate also produces a very good dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

Discover the grape variety: Cabernet franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest red grape varieties in Bordeaux. The Libourne region is its terroir where it develops best. The terroirs of Saint-Emilion and Fronsac allow it to mature and develop its best range of aromas. It is also the majority in many blends. The very famous Château Cheval Blanc, for example, uses 60% Cabernet Franc. The wines produced with Cabernet Franc are medium in colour with fine tannins and subtle aromas of small red fruits and spices. When blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it brings complexity and a bouquet of aromas to the wine. It produces fruity wines that can be drunk quite quickly, but whose great vintages can be kept for a long time. It is an earlier grape variety than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means that it is planted as far north as the Loire Valley. In Anjou, it is also used to make sweet rosé wines. Cabernet Franc is now used in some twenty countries in Europe and throughout the world.
