The wine region of England
England, although more famous for gin and beer, has been producing wine since Roman Imperial times (100 – 400 AD). Historically the country has not been known for the quality of its winemaking, inhibited by its northerly latitude and resulting cool Climate. A black grape variety from the southwest that produces a wine with spicy tannins and black currant and raspberry aromas. Under the name of Mansois, it is the main grape variety of Marcillac; it is also one of the important varieties of Gaillacois, where it is called Braucol. It is also used in the blends of other South-Western appellations (Fronton, Lavilledieu, Estaing, Madiran). Syn.: braucol, pinenc, mansois.
