The wine region of Val di Cornia
Tuscan DOC (1989) on the south Tyrrhenian coast (Piombino, Suvereto elevated to DOCG 2011), a maritime extension of the Maremma. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lead in reds ('Tuscan-Bordeaux' style close to Bolgheri) — full-bodied and precise with cassis, black cherry, plum, garrigue and a mineral edge, ripe tannins and excellent ageing potential. Sangiovese (≥40% of Rosso DOCG) adds structure. Vermentino taut and Ansonica saline in whites.
The wine region of Tuscany
Kingdom of Sangiovese: upright reds with cherry, plum, dried herbs and leather, lively acidity and firm tannins. Fleshy, food-friendly Chianti Classico DOCG, deep long-ageing Brunello di Montalcino (spice, tobacco, ripe black fruit), elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. On the coast, Bolgheri crafts the opulent Cabernet- and Merlot-based 'Super Tuscans'. Some fresh white Vernaccia.
The word of the wine: Merrain
Oak wood split into planks used to make the barrel.
