Discovering the wine region of Faugères

Faugeres is an appellation in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Although it also covers white and rosé wines, the appellation is best known for its Rich, ripe red wines made from the classic Rhone varieties of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, as well as the more MediterraneanCinsaut and Lladoner Pelut. The appellation covers the southern slopes of a series of hills only a few kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The town of Faugeres forms the centre of the area, which extends 10 km from east to west.

The town of Carcassonne is a Short distance to the southwest. This position is very important for the Terroir of Faugeres, as the hills protect against the cold influences of the northern Massif Central and orient the vines towards the prevailing sun. This gives Faugeres a Warm, classically Mediterranean Climate, where even the later grape varieties like Mourvèdre can reach Full maturity. As is often the case, the best sites are on the steeper slopes at the top of the hill, while the vineyards on the plains stretching out towards the sea produce mostly lower quality wines that are often sold under the regional PGI title.

Discover the grape variety: Admirable

According to genetic analyses carried out in Montpellier (Hérault), it is the result of a cross between the bicane and the chasselas obtained in Saumur (Maine and Loire Valley) by Doctor Auguste Courtiller in the 1840s, registered in the Official Catalogue of table grape varieties, list A1. Today, the Admirable de Courtiller is practically no longer multiplied.

Discover the grape variety: Gros Cabernet

A very old variety grown in the Bordeaux region, where it originated. It is the result of a natural intraspecific cross between iron and black txakoli, although this has yet to be confirmed, especially as the latter has the same synonym (h)ondarrabi beltza, which is also attributed to cabernet franc. According to genetic analyses carried out in Montpellier (Hérault), gros Cabernet is the mother of carmenère. Almost unknown in other French wine regions, gros Cabernet is no longer replanted and is therefore in danger of disappearing. It can sometimes be found in isolated strains in very old vines, in Germany, in the south of Australia, and can now be found in wine conservatories in the south-west of France, ... .

The word of the wine: Acidic (flavor)

Acidity is present in all wines, and is essential in white wines. It is due to the presence of different organic acids in the wine, and is expressed in the mouth by a sensation of freshness combined with other elements, such as minerality or a note of bitterness. Moderately present, it brings relief and vivacity to the wine.
