American, resulting from a natural cross between taylor (Vitis Labrusca x Vitis Riparia) and Vitis Riparia, the seeds of the taylor then sown in 1869 by Otto Wasserzicher in Nauvoo, Illinois. Noah has been used extensively as a progenitor by hybridizers such as Baco, Bertille-Seyve, Castel, Gaillard and Seibel, the best known being baco blanc or baco 22A (folle blanche x Noah). In France, it is one of the six hybrids prohibited since 1935 (included in European regulations): clinton, herbemont, isabelle, jacquez, Noah and othello. Today, it has practically disappeared and can sometimes be found in private homes established in vineyards.

The wine region of Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert is located in the region of Pays d'Oc of Vin de Pays of France. Vin de Pays (VDP), the French national equivalent of PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) at the European level, is a quality category of French wines, positioned between Vin de Table (VDT) and Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). This layer of the French appellation system was initially introduced in September 1968 by the INAO, the official appellation authority. It underwent several early revisions in the 1970s, followed by substantial changes in September 2000 and again in 2009, when all existing VDT titles were automatically registered with the European Union as PGI.
