Sub-region of Canelones (Uruguay) north of Montevideo (around Juanicó), world capital of Tannat, more densely planted here than in its native Madiran. Tannat is the signature red: intense and structured with blackberry, black cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, spices and a balsamic touch, powerful tannins and vibrant acidity, capable of very long ageing. Supple Merlot and firm Cabernet Sauvignon complement. Estates: Pisano, Viña Progreso, Bouza.
