The wine region of York Mountain
AVA (1983) — first sub-appellation of Paso Robles (SLO County, California) on the western edge, 8 miles from the Pacific: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for elegant reds, Chardonnay and Viognier as complements. High-altitude vineyards around 1,500 ft, cool and humid maritime climate far cooler than the rest of the county. Pacific fog cooling nights, marked diurnal temperature swings. Infertile chalky limestone soils — concentration and acidity as signatures.
The wine region of California
Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
The word of the wine: Amber
(1) A colour close to amber, sometimes taken on by white wines aged for a long time, or by oxidising prematurely. (2) A term used on the label to designate white Rivesaltes aged for at least thirty months in an oxidizing environment.
