Whites with many faces: mineral and taut at Chablis (lemon, green apple, flint), opulent and buttery at Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet (hazelnut, brioche, yellow fruits), tense and chalky in Champagne (Blanc de Blancs). Also vinified sparkling and widely exported (Sonoma, Margaret River, Casablanca). A Burgundian variety, a cross of Pinot Noir × Gouais Blanc, half-sibling of Aligoté.
Venetian DOC (2004) in southern Padua and southern Venice, historic Benedictine farmlands on the Venetian plain. Merlot as the supple, fruit-forward flagship red: violet, cherry, blackberry and floral-fruity notes, round tannins. Raboso Piave — native variety — as a vivid, tannic red with acidulous red fruits. Cabernet and Refosco as structured native complement.
