The wine region of Alta Mesa

AVA (2006, south Sacramento County) in the north-central Lodi on the 'tabletop' plateau 21 miles south of Sacramento. Zinfandel is the dense and fruity signature; Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot dominant; alternative varieties Verdelho, Vermentino, Albariño, Grenache Blanc, and Tannat in diversification. Dense San Joaquin series soils (90% heavy clay and gravel), transitional climate warmer than other Lodi AVAs. 5,000 planted acres, recognized quality grape supplier.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Thick

Said of a heavy, pasty wine lacking in finesse.
