Very high ageing potential and polyphenol content (health reputation). Star of Madiran AOC in Béarn and the national grape of Uruguay (Canelones, Maldonado). Also grown in Irouléguy and Tursan. AVA (2006, south Sacramento County) in the north-central Lodi on the 'tabletop' plateau 21 miles south of Sacramento. Zinfandel is the dense and fruity signature; Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot dominant; alternative varieties Verdelho, Vermentino, Albariño, Grenache Blanc, and Tannat in diversification. Dense San Joaquin series soils (90% heavy clay and gravel), transitional climate warmer than other Lodi AVAs. 5,000 planted acres, recognized quality grape supplier.

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
