The wine region of Commandaria
Cypriot PDO from the southern foothills of the Troodos (14 classified villages), the oldest named wine still produced (800 BC) — 'wine of kings and king of wines' according to Richard the Lionheart. Amber liqueur wine obtained by sun-drying Xynisteri white (85-95%) and Mavro red grapes for 7-10 days, minimum 2-year barrel aging. Enchanting profile with intense notes of raisins, fig, candied apricot, honey, caramel, and gentle spices. Natural at 14% or fortified at 15-20%.
The wine region of Lemesos
Cyprus's largest wine region on the southern slopes of the Troodos around Limassol (Krasochoria). Signature native grapes. Mavro in light, approachable red with signature notes of cherry, ripe plum, Mediterranean herbs and a spicy touch, supple tannins. Xynisteri star in white: dry and mineral (citrus, green apple, herbs, saline touch), taut, thirst-quenching palate.
The word of the wine: Mercaptan
Organic compound resulting from the combination of alcohol and sulphide (H2S) producing an unpleasant odour reminiscent of town gas and rotten eggs.
