Ripens earlier than classic Spätburgunder. Grown mainly in Franconia, Württemberg and the Ahr, it produces quality German wines (QbA or Prädikatswein). A German black variety, an early-ripening mutation of Pinot Noir, related to French Pinot Noir Précoce.
