The wine region of Saddle Rock Malibu

AVA in the Santa Monica Mountains west of Los Angeles (2006, 850 ha at ~500 m, 8 km from the Pacific, Hambright and Gilroy loam clay draining soils, marine breezes tempering hot dry summers, south-facing slopes): signature Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah as bold reds — intense concentrated fruit balanced by altitude freshness. Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier as boutique mountain complements.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Suave

Said of a fine and unctuous wine.
