Ward of the Walker Bay district (Western Cape, South Africa) between Houw Hoek and the Bot River lagoon, 50 km from Stellenbosch: Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc are the signature aromatic whites; Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Shiraz as reds. Mixed Bokkeveld shale and Table Mountain sandstone soils, valley exposed to Atlantic and lagoon breezes — late ripening, aromatic complexity and balanced acidity. Cradle of South African wine. Signature Chenin Blanc (Steen, 20%) in ample, fresh whites with notes of quince, yellow apple, honey and acacia flower, from crisp dry to sweet. Sharp, iodised Sauvignon Blanc (Walker Bay, Constantia), balanced Chardonnay. Reds: emblematic Pinotage with roasted aromas (coffee, plum, smoke), firm Cabernet Sauvignon, spicy Syrah.
