Southern Monterey County AVA (1994, ~2,000 acres planted), 20 miles north of Paso Robles: Syrah and Petite Sirah as rich and opulent reds, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Portuguese varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz) as complements. Warm climate (Region III-IV, 3,200-3,500 GDD) with the county's widest diurnal range (up to 50°F). Gravelly sandy Lockwood series loam soils. Sheltered — ideal for Rhone signatures.

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
