Located on the French coast of Médoc in Margaux, Château Mauvesin Barton is a vineyard rich in history and flavors. Established in 1866 by the Count of Mauvesin, the château is likely one of the oldest vineyards in the region, and is today managed by the Barton family, who acquired the estate in 2012. It is a 45-hectare property with 28 hectares of vines, spread across three distinct, well-exposed vineyards that produce both red and white wines. The vines are mainly planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec grape varieties for the red wines, and Semillon, Muscadelle, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Gris for white wines. The intermediate to sandy-clay soil provides the potential for producing deep and powerful wines. The estate adheres to rational viticulture practices focused on environment preservation, promoting the health of the vines. The unique wine style of the red wines from Château Mauvesin Barton is a result of precise cuvaison, and the wines are aged in French oak barrels. The white wines are primarily vinified in stainless steel tanks and aged in oak barrels for a short period. All the wines produced are characterized by intense aromas and ripe, harmonious tannins. The cuvées express notes of red fruits and blackcurrant for reds, as well as fresh fruit and nut aromas for whites. Château Mauvesin Barton offers estate tours to showcase and appreciate its wines. Visitors are invited to learn about wine crafting from the modern and comfortable facilities and sample the estate’s produce. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful Mediterranean landscape, which is the perfect complement to their visit.

Discovering the wine region of Médoc

Bordeaux's Médoc is an area of coastal lagoons, sand dunes and pine forests located on the 45th parallel. It is also a global wine powerhouse, and home to four of the world's most prestigious wine villages: Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien. The estates located in these villages produce some of the most expensive bottles in the world. The region has also provided all but one of the châteaux included in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification (Haut-Brion).

The Médoc vineyards cover about 16,000 hectares, including the various small appellations. Approximately 5500 hectares of vines are classified for the production of AOC/AOP Médoc wines. Wedged between the Atlantic coast and the wide Gironde estuary, the Médoc is in fact a peninsula. It stretches 80 kilometres (50 miles) to the northwest, from the city of Bordeaux to the Pointe de Grave.
