Podravje is Slovenia's largest and most productive wine region. It is located towards the eastern half of the country, and Centers around the key towns of Maribor and Ormoz. With roughly 11,000 hectares (30,000 acres) of Vineyard">Vineyard, Podravje has twice as much land under vine as its western neighbor, Posavje. More than just a local center of activity, Maribor has Long been a wine center for this region of Europe as a whole.

Today, only a small proportion of the wine produced here is exported, much of it produced and sold in bulk. Over the last ten million years, the Pannonian Sea Dried out completely, leaving the Pannonian Basin (also known as the Carpathian Basin) in its wake. The erosion that took place over this period of geomorphological activity created hundreds of small, rounded hills with mineral-rich, free-draining soils – ideal viticultural land. Pinot Gris is a grey grape variety mutated from Pinot Noir.
