Discovering the wine region of Vénétie

Veneto is an important and growing wine region in northeastern Italy. Veneto is administratively Part of the Triveneto area, aLong with its smaller neighbors, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In terms of geography, culture and wine styles, it represents a transition from the Alpine and Germanic-Slavic end of Italy to the warmer, drier, more Roman lands to the South. Veneto is slightly smaller than the other major Italian wine regions - Piedmont, Tuscany, Lombardy, Puglia and Sicily - but it produces more wine than any of them.

Although the southern regions, Sicily and Puglia, have long been Italy's main wine producers, that Balance began to shift northward to the Veneto in the second half of the 20th century. In the 1990s, southern Italian wine languished in an increasingly competitive and demanding world, while the Veneto upped its Game">game, gaining recognition with wines such as Valpolicella, Amarone, Soave and Prosecco">Prosecco. With Fruity red Valpolicella complementing its intense Amarone and Sweet Recioto, the Veneto has a formidable portfolio of red wines to accompany its refreshing whites, like Soave and Sparkling Prosecco. Although most of the new vineyards that have enabled the Veneto to expand its wine production have been of dubious viticultural quality, today more than 25% of the region's wines are produced and sold under DOC/DOCG designations.

Discover the grape variety: Cornichon blanc

A very old variety that has been multiplied in many Mediterranean wine-producing countries, due to the fact that its grapes ripen quite late. It is only in Italy and Greece that it still occupies a significant area. In France, it is only found among amateur gardeners and/or collectors. By its foliage in particular, the white gherkin is different from the purple gherkin this last one is given as very little sensitive to the grey rot.

UK wine trade urges government rethink on duty tax plans

Ministers have said plans to link duty tax more closely to alcohol levels (abv) from February 2023 will create a simpler and fairer system, but UK wine trade leaders have called for a government rethink. The issue is coming to a head as a government-led consultation period nears its 30 January deadline. While plans to abolish the premium tax rate on sparkling wine have been widely welcomed, the new system would see duty increase on some still and fortified wines. This could lead to price rises, ...

Walls’ hidden gems: Domaine La Ferme St-Martin, Beaumes de Venise

Onwards, upwards. The roads get narrower, the corners get tighter. I step out of the car when I finally reach the winery and the air is so much fresher here. I go to take a sip from my water bottle and a gust of wind makes it whistle. I stand with Thomas Jullien and we look over the vineyards. It’s not yet spring, and the vines look little more than sticks. ‘It’s a lunar landscape at the moment,’ he says, as a friend’s flock of 300 sheep has just passed through to graze on every scrap of green b ...
