Discover the grape variety: Arbane
Arbane or arbanne is a very old white grape variety from the north/east of France, coming from the Aube and more precisely from the Champagne region. The Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins de Champagne wishes to preserve the use of traditional grape varieties of Champagne. The Arbane is a small bunch of grapes with small berries and a very sweet pulp, a late variety that needs sun and heat to concentrate all its sugars. It gives a wine rich in alcohol, elegant and nervous, with a floral nose and a nice acidity.

The viticultural areas of the region cover such a distance that there is a widely accepted division between its northern and southern parts.

Walls: Counoise spreads its wings
It’s easy to forget that the southern Rhône’s four most prevalent red varieties aren’t indigenous. Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre all appear to originate from Spain; Syrah made its way down the river from the northern Rhône. Of the long tail of other grapes, most have their roots closer to home. Plantings have dwindled in recent years, but today local varieties are experiencing renewed interest. One that’s finding a lot of fans – both in the Rhône and further afield – is Counoise. Walls: top northern Rhône reds under £30
In preparation for this column I tasted 46 reds in total, and – taking both quality and value into account – I can recommend 33 of them. Overall, the reds were less consistent than the whites, and although the lows were lower, the highs were higher. This tasting confirmed that it’s still possible to buy genuinely excellent northern Rhône reds for under £30 in the UK. That being said, it’s virtually impossible to find any Cornas, Côte-Rôtie or Hermitage for under £30 a bottle these days, but ther ...
The word of the wine: Vintage (champagne)
It is a champagne made from a single harvest. In principle, we only vintage the great years: 1988, 1990, 1995, 1996... We find more often, now, the very good 2002, and the 2004, a little short.
