In the middle of the magnificent and lush landscape of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru in France, lies the wine estate Château Laroque. The vineyards, spanning nearly 14 hectares, are located on the hills at the northern end of Saint-Émilion, in the Gironde department. The name Château Laroque comes from the place called Laroque, which is first mentioned in 1288 during the reign of King Philip the Fair. Château Laroque, as a particular cru, was created by Charles and Marie-Antoinette Palicot in 1867, and over time, the estate has been fully restored to meet the image of authenticity and modernity. The philosophy of Château Laroque is simple: expressive, balanced and complex wines that perfectly reflect the Saint-Émilion terroir. The vineyards are well drained and sun-exposed, characterized by their clay soil. Soils are fertilized in spring and some are even regularly worked to stimulate the production of the best grapes. The grapes are hand-picked, only when they are in perfect ripeness in order to guarantee a maximum of exceptional aromas and flavors. Once in the winemaking cellar, where pre-fermentation maceration and strict temperature control are applied, the wine is then caged for an ageing period ranging from 16 to 18 months before being put on the market. In addition to wine production, Château Laroque wine estate also offers tours and tastings for wine lovers. Visitors can admire the magnificent property, discover the secrets of the vineyard and winemaking, and taste emblematic crus such as Château Laroque Grand Vin Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and Château Laroque Rose.

Discover the grape variety: Cabernet franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest red grape varieties in Bordeaux. The Libourne region is its terroir where it develops best. The terroirs of Saint-Emilion and Fronsac allow it to mature and develop its best range of aromas. It is also the majority in many blends. The very famous Château Cheval Blanc, for example, uses 60% Cabernet Franc. The wines produced with Cabernet Franc are medium in colour with fine tannins and subtle aromas of small red fruits and spices. When blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it brings complexity and a bouquet of aromas to the wine. It produces fruity wines that can be drunk quite quickly, but whose great vintages can be kept for a long time. It is an earlier grape variety than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means that it is planted as far north as the Loire Valley. In Anjou, it is also used to make sweet rosé wines. Cabernet Franc is now used in some twenty countries in Europe and throughout the world.
