The Côtes de Bordeaux appellation was created in 2009 to merge four existing appellations used in the Bordeaux region of France. These four appellations are The Premières Côtes de Blaye, Côtes de Castillon, Côtes de Francs and the red wines of the Cadillac region. The latter were previously under the appellation Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. The changes were a commercially motivated decision, intended to create unity between these important but lesser known appellations.
They were intended to simplify the Structure of the Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. However, the New banner of the four appellations is not entirely original or easily differentiated from the Old one. It can be said that it has added further complexity to the Bordeaux appellations. This is underlined by the fact that the four components of the appellations are geographically extensive.
Malbec, a high-yielding red grape variety, produces tannic and colourful wines. It is produced in different wine-growing regions and changes its name according to the grape variety. Called Auxerrois in Cahors, Malbec in Bordeaux, it is also known as Côt. 6,000 hectares of the Malbec grape are grown in France (in decline since the 1950s). Malbec is also very successful in Argentina. The country has become the world's leading producer of Malbec and offers wines with great potential.
wines from the region of Côtes de Bordeaux go well with generally quite well with dishes of beef, veal or game (deer, venison) such as recipes of pork tongue with bacon and onions, veal blanquette burger or home-made cassoulet.
On the nose in the region of Côtes de Bordeaux often reveals types of flavors of red fruit, dried fruit or plum and sometimes also flavors of jam, black fruits or chocolate. In the mouth in the region of Côtes de Bordeaux is a powerful with a nice balance between acidity and tannins.
Bordeaux’s wine bureau, the CIVB, confirmed a financing deal has been agreed with the government to help winemakers pull up thousands of hectares of vineyards, as announced at the Salon d’Agriculture show in Paris. ‘These tools put us in a position to pull out 9,500 hectares of vines in [the department of] Gironde,’ the CIVB said. Cheval Blanc 2021 was released en primeur this morning (19 May) at €390 per bottle ex-Bordeaux, up by around 3% on the 202o-vintage opening price last year.
