Discovering the wine region of Aconcagua Costa

Aconcagua Costa is the coastal Part of the Aconcagua region of Chile. It was recognized as a distinct DO appellation in 2012. The area has shown itself to have a cool Climate well suited to white varieties and Pinot Noir. Syrah and Merlot are also grown.

Wines tend to be fresh and crisp with great Aromatic intensity. This all contrasts with the inland areas of the Aconcagua Valley, where temperatures are higher and Carmenère and other Bordeaux varieties are to the fore. All of the zones are in Close proximity to the Pacific Ocean which provides cooling breezes and rainfall. The designation forms part of a wider move to classify Chilean wine regions as "Costa" (Coastal), "Entre Cordilleras" (Between The Mountain Ranges) or "Andes".

There are several zones which qualify for the DO. Some of these, such as Zapallar and Quillota do not have their own individual DO. Producers in Casablanca Valley, San Antonio Valley and Leyda Valley, which have their own existing DO, might use the Aconcagua Costa designation if combining their local grapes from other zones. Vineyard plantings mostly date from the mid 2000s or later.
