Rich and structured whites with excellent ageing potential, a deep golden hue, an ample palate with fresh acidity and signature aromas of almond, white flowers (acacia), ripe yellow fruits (peach, apricot) and saline mineral notes. Also typical orange maceration wines. Star of the Istarska Malvazija (Croatia) and Malvasia Istriana di Friuli appellations, a great white of the northern Adriatic. The wine region of San Francisco Bay

Multi-county AVA north of the Central Coast (Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara…): Cabernet Sauvignon is the ruling red (~24%), followed by Chardonnay (~19%), old-vine Zinfandel (~10%), Merlot, Pinot Noir and Petite Sirah. Contrasting signature profiles — racy, fresh Pinot and Chardonnay along foggy maritime hills; bold, rustic Cabernet and Zin inland with intense blackberry, black cherry and spice. Bay breezes and fog moderate.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Effervescent

Any wine loaded with CO2 (carbon dioxide), which is revealed in the form of bubbles, reinforcing the freshness effect in the mouth. This gas production is the result of what is called the second fermentation in the bottle. It occurs in champagnes and sparkling wines such as crémants.
