Located in the heart of the Castile and León region in Spain, the Protos wine estate is renowned for its exceptional wine production. Recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious cellars of the Denominación de Origen (DO) Ribera del Duero, Protos - meaning "first" in Greek - has always aspired to be at the forefront of viticulture since its creation in 1927. The estate stretches over 1400 hectares of vineyards, carefully cultivated on clay-limestone and sandy soils, where 70% of the vineyard is planted with Tinto Fino (or Tempranillo), a native grape variety. The weather conditions of the region, characterized by a continental climate with hot summers and harsh winters, as well as a wide temperature range between day and night, are ideal for the perfect ripening of the grapes. These are hand-picked to retain only the best fruit and minimize damage during harvesting. The aging is then mostly done in French oak barrels, in the majestic wine cellar of the property that stretches under the hill of Peñafiel, thus offering ideal conditions for the maturation of wine. The Protos estate is particularly famous for its Protos Reserva, a red wine that beautifully illustrates the power and complexity of the Ribera del Duero terroir. It seduces with its intensely fruity character, balanced tannic structure, excellent acidity and long finish. In addition to its quality wine production, the Protos Estate is a benchmark in vinicultural architecture. Its main building, designed by British architect Richard Rogers, is an architectural feat, combining modern aesthetics and respect for the environment.
