The wine region of Chianti Colli Senesi

Largest sub-zone of Chianti DOCG (Sienese hills): Sangiovese signature red king (>=75%) — intense ruby with signature notes of cherry, ripe red fruits, violet, light spice and herbal hint, full-bodied yet balanced palate with fine, persistent tannins, fruitier and more digestible style than Chianti Classico, supple tannins from warm climate on clay-sandy soils. DOCG, 6 months oak and 6 months bottle aging, 5-10 years cellaring.

The wine region of Tuscany

Kingdom of Sangiovese: upright reds with cherry, plum, dried herbs and leather, lively acidity and firm tannins. Fleshy, food-friendly Chianti Classico DOCG, deep long-ageing Brunello di Montalcino (spice, tobacco, ripe black fruit), elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. On the coast, Bolgheri crafts the opulent Cabernet- and Merlot-based 'Super Tuscans'. Some fresh white Vernaccia.

The word of the wine: Performance

Quantity of grapes harvested per hectare. In AOC, the average yield is limited on the proposal of the appellation syndicate, validated by the Inao. The use of high-performance plant material (especially clones) and better control of vine diseases have increased yields. This is not without consequences on the quality of the wines (dilution) and on the state of the market (too much wine). We must not over-simplify: low yields are not synonymous with quality, and it is often in years with generous harvests that we find the greatest vintages (1982 and 1986 in Bordeaux, 1996 in Champagne, 1990 and 2005 in Burgundy...).
