Discovering the wine region of Castille

Castilla-La Mancha is a large region located South and east of the Spanish capital, Madrid. Inexpensive table wines are produced from a variety of Grapes. Higher quality wines are increasingly available, but the region is traditionally known as a source of low quality bulk wine. More than half of Spain's grapes are grown here.

Traditionally, only grape varieties that can tolerate hot, Dry conditions were planted. The white Airen grape is at the top of the list and remains the most planted grape in Castilla-La Mancha (and indeed in all of Spain). However, it is not a particularly respected variety, so many producers have expanded their portfolios. Red grapes dominate the rest of the range.

Côte-Rôtie & Condrieu 2021: report and top-scoring wines

Is frost a bad thing? Yes; but it can have unexpected benefits. It can kill shoots, reducing yields, but it doesn’t necessarily affect quality. In cooler growing seasons, vines with fewer bunches can find it easier to ripen them. So given the inclement conditions that followed the frost in 2021, optimists might consider it advantageous that the crop load had been lightened. Walls: My top 10 Rhône wines of the year 2021

Of all the columns I’ve written this year, this one should have been the easiest to write: open my tasting notes file, sort by year 2021, sort by score, select the top ten highest scoring wines, copy and paste. Go to the pub. But it’s not that simple. Some wines are technically perfect and undeniably excellent, wines I respect greatly that deserve their high scores – but on a personal level, they leave me a little cold.
