Discovering the wine region of Castille

Castilla-La Mancha is a large region located South and east of the Spanish capital, Madrid. Inexpensive table wines are produced from a variety of Grapes. Higher quality wines are increasingly available, but the region is traditionally known as a source of low quality bulk wine. More than half of Spain's grapes are grown here.

Traditionally, only grape varieties that can tolerate hot, Dry conditions were planted. The white Airen grape is at the top of the list and remains the most planted grape in Castilla-La Mancha (and indeed in all of Spain). However, it is not a particularly respected variety, so many producers have expanded their portfolios. Red grapes dominate the rest of the range.

Discover the grape variety: Etraire de la Dui

Etraire de la Dui is a black grape variety, originating from the department of Isère. It is so similar to the Persian that many people have difficulty differentiating between them. This resemblance has earned it the nickname "gros persan". This grape variety is now in danger of extinction. It is only cultivated on 10ha. The leaves of the Dui are large and have convex teeth. Its bunches and berries are generally large. A vigorous variety, it is quite productive and prefers a short pruning. This plant appreciates deep, clay-limestone soils. With an average budburst, it reaches maturity in the second half of the year. It fears winter frosts and is susceptible to shattering, especially when fully ripe. On the other hand, it defends itself well against powdery mildew and grey rot. This variety produces concentrated, colorful and tannic wines. Some of them are astringent when the grape variety is too ripe.

Scientists find new clues to ‘billion-dollar’ vine diseases

New research on grapevine trunk diseases has shown how fungi can collaborate to attack a vine via a kind of ‘extracellular bomb’. Antioxidants may help wineries to fight back, said the international group of researchers led by the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) have been of growing concern to vineyard owners in recent decades. Almost 20% of the world’s vineyards were affected, said the International Organisation for Vine & Wine in 2015. A 201 ...

Napa Valley Grapegrowers to receive climate change funding

While vineyards are managed one vintage at a time, farming practices take a longer view. A survey of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers members found that, on average, about 90% wanted more education and resources for water conservation, climate resilience and climate-smart farming opportunities. This grant will go a long way to help provide those resources. ‘Farmers are by nature risk averse,’ said Molly Williams of Napa Valley Grapegrowers. ‘Climate change poses considerable risks. We aren’t plantin ...
