General AVA of Mendocino County (northern California) with varied micro-climates: signature historic Zinfandel as king red (planted by Italian migrants in the late 19th c. ), notably Redwood Valley and Mendocino Ridge - spicy, peppery reds, ripe and candied black fruits, fleshy tannins. Also fresh, fine Pinot Noir (~2,700 ac) on foggy coastal sectors, Carignan, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Warm inland zones for Cabernet and Merlot, an eclectic Italo-Burgundian identity.

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). White grape variety of Italian origin, and the main white variety grown in France. Its large bunches give fine, light and lively wines, suitable for distillation: today it is the main variety for making cognac and armagnac. Ugni blanc, which is a little richer in alcohol when grown in Mediterranean regions, is used in the blending of the Provence and Corsica appellations, often in association with other grape varieties that bring aromas and structure, such as clairette, grenache blanc or sauvignon. Ugni blanc is also used, on a secondary basis, in the production of certain white wines in Gironde (AOC Bordeaux, Entre-deux-Mers, etc.).
