Light, fruity reds with a clear ruby robe, soft tannins and an airy palate, showing discreet aromas of red fruits (cherry, raspberry) typical of the Loire. Rustic, airy style for early drinking. Now nearly extinct, preserved in INRAE ampelographic collections, bearing witness to the pre-phylloxera varietal diversity of the Loire Valley. The wine region of California Shenandoah Valley

Sierra Foothills AVA (Amador, El Dorado, 1983, 1,000-2,000 ft): signature Zinfandel as ruling red (old vines including Grandpère Vineyard 1866, America's oldest) — full-bodied and concentrated with intense blackberry, black cherry, bramble, spice and earthy notes, old vines adding dried fruits, pepper and leather, high alcohol balanced by acidity. Primitivo and Barbera complement. Mediterranean climate, 30°C diurnal range, weathered granites.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Burgundy piece

228-litre barrel.
