Only non-contiguous AVA in the United States (1997) on the Mendocino coast: vineyards above 1,200 ft, nicknamed "Islands in the Sky" emerging from coastal fog. Old-vine Zinfandel signature variety, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Riesling and Chardonnay complement. Poor, well-drained sandy and schist soils, stressed vines producing small thick-skinned berries with concentrated aromas. Cool maritime Region I-II Winkler climate, vibrant and structured wines.

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).
