Umbrian DOC (2011) south of Perugia around Spoleto and Montefalco, hilly calcareous terroirs. Native Trebbiano Spoletino is the star white (≥85% varietal): straw-gold, dry and taut with citrus, white flowers, green apple, herbs and a mineral-saline edge, fine acidity and rare ageing potential for a Trebbiano. Also spumante (méthode classique) and golden passito. Vinified in tank, barrel or amphora.
The wine region of Umbria
"Green heart" of Italy, cradle of Sagrantino: exceptional tannic red in Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, dense and concentrated with notes of blackberry, candied plum, liquorice, spice and leather, powerful tannins and long ageing. Suppler Sangiovese in blends, Cabernet and Merlot in Torgiano DOCG. Orvieto whites based on Grechetto and Trebbiano, full and almondy, from dry to sweet Muffato. ~13,000 ha between Tuscany and Lazio.
The word of the wine: Late harvest
A name historically used in Alsace, late harvest refers to grapes harvested during over-ripening for the production of sweet and syrupy wines.
