The Magdelaine Castle of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is located on a stony plateau on the outskirts of towns. The estate is surrounded by ancient buildings and huts shaded by towering elms. The cellar, built in the 19th century, houses captivating bottles of the best Bordeaux wines, from Château Magdelaine. The estate is located on the edge of a river which serves as a backdrop for the grapes slowly ripening on the vine. The vines spread over three hectares, and are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. The vineyard is carefully maintained by a team of winemakers who ensure that each plot is plowed, selected and harvested with care. The soil is rich, with a mix of clay, sand, and pebbles. The proximity of rivers and ponds provides perfect humidity and ensures slow fruit maturation. Along each row of vines, wooden scaffolding is built to support the grape bunches. At harvest time, the wine is carefully pressed to preserve the grape quality. The Château buildings house four cellars, where the wine is aged and distilled, sheltered from the weather and the sun's rays. The best wines are then selected, bottled, and named Armagnac de Château Magdelaine. They are designed for connoisseurs and those who appreciate fine wines. The estate produces even more complex wines, rich in aromas, that mature and improve over time.

Discover the grape variety: Cabernet franc

Cabernet Franc is one of the oldest red grape varieties in Bordeaux. The Libourne region is its terroir where it develops best. The terroirs of Saint-Emilion and Fronsac allow it to mature and develop its best range of aromas. It is also the majority in many blends. The very famous Château Cheval Blanc, for example, uses 60% Cabernet Franc. The wines produced with Cabernet Franc are medium in colour with fine tannins and subtle aromas of small red fruits and spices. When blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it brings complexity and a bouquet of aromas to the wine. It produces fruity wines that can be drunk quite quickly, but whose great vintages can be kept for a long time. It is an earlier grape variety than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means that it is planted as far north as the Loire Valley. In Anjou, it is also used to make sweet rosé wines. Cabernet Franc is now used in some twenty countries in Europe and throughout the world.
