The Château Desmirail is a former medieval castle that has been transformed into a vineyard estate in Margaux, Premier Crus Classé du Médoc (Bordeaux) in France. Located near the famous local chateaus, Lafite and Latour, Desmirail is among the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in the region. The chateau itself dates back to 1250, when Guillaume de Lamarque, Baron of Desmirail, arrived in Margaux. Since then, the vineyards around the castle have been cultivated, until the 1850s when Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the estate and began implementing intensive cultivation systems. To this day, Desmirail is home to vines that are over 100 years old. The estate produces superior quality red wines with grapes from two varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 24 months and stamped with the "Margaux" label to ensure that consumers know they come from the best grape varieties of the region. A vineyard in Château Desmirail extends over clay-limestone soils to the east of the Margaux commune. With these ideal conditions, the vines grow wonderfully and give birth to sensual and delicious wines. The combination of traditional and modern techniques promises high-level and luxurious classified wines to share with friends and on special occasions. The estate also opens to guests with regular tours. Visitors will discover the ancient vineyards and can taste wines with snacks ranging from cheese platters, omelettes, to charcuterie platters. Wine tasting classes are also offered to learn more about the pairings of food and wines. The Château Desmirail is the result of one generation's work to the next.
