Smallest DOC in Portugal (~3,500 ha) between the Douro and the Dão, first delimited region for sparkling wines in the country, altitude vineyards 500–900 m on granite soils. Traditional-method sparkling wines are the signatures: Malvasia Fina, Cerceal, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in fine cuvées with notes of green apple, citrus, brioche, white flowers and a mineral touch, elegant bubble and altitude freshness. Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz in still reds. Fine Portuguese bubbles.

Vast region of north-central Portugal, a fragmented mosaic of distinct sub-regions. In the west, Bairrada makes dense Baga reds with notes of black cherry, blackberry and leather, firm tannins — the base of the great Portuguese sparkling wines. In the centre, Dao produces fine Touriga Nacional reds (violet, raspberry, spice) and elegant Encruzado whites (flowers, citrus, butter). To the continental east, fleshy Touriga of Beira Interior and aromatic Fernao Pires.
