The Broadbent Estate is an exceptional winery located on the island of Madeira, not in Austria, but indeed in Portugal. Far from the lush lands of mainland Europe, this estate owes its name to Michael Broadbent, one of the most renowned sommeliers of the 20th century. His passion for the ancient wines of Madeira led him to establish the Broadbent Estate, with the intention of revolutionizing the wine industry of this small island lost in the Atlantic. Spanning several hectares, the estate benefits from the unique climatic conditions of Madeira, where sea breezes blended with brilliant sunshine provide a perfect terroir for viticulture, and especially for the production of the famous Madeira wines. This fortified wine, known for its deep and delicate flavor, is made based on several local grape varieties, including Sercial, Verdelho, Bual, and Malvasia. The Broadbent Estate produces these traditional Madeira wines, but also Vinho Verde, port, and even still red and white wines. Their wines are produced with a philosophy of respect for tradition and the environment. Human intervention here is minimized in the winemaking process, allowing natural factors to play their role. The wines from the Broadbent Estate are recognized for their finesse and elegance, a result of an admirable balance between the sweetness of residual sugar, refreshing acidity, and the complexity brought by long aging in barrels. Their Madeira wines are particularly renowned for their ability to be preserved for decades, even centuries, without losing their superb quality.
