Accessible profile for cold climates. Grown mainly in Canada (Quebec, Nova Scotia) and the north-eastern United States for continental cold-climate vineyards. A black hybrid bred in 1911 by Eugène Kuhlmann in Alsace, cold and mildew-resistant.

Sunny, generous southern reds: spicy, peppery Syrah, round, candied Grenache (ripe fruit, garrigue), deep Mourvèdre, structured Carignan, supple Cinsault. From robust Corbières and Minervois to fresher Terrasses du Larzac, via Faugères on schist or taut Pic Saint-Loup.
