Discover the grape variety: Zweigelt

Supple and fruity reds with a vivid ruby colour, soft tannins and snappy acidity, with aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, red plum and gentle spices. Made as easy-drinking young reds and as more structured, oak-aged cellar wines. The most planted red variety in Austria (Burgenland, Carnuntum, Neusiedlersee), created in 1922 by Friedrich Zweigelt in Klosterneuburg, a cross of saint laurent × blaufränkisch.

The wine region of Santa Cruz Mountains

High-altitude AVA above the Pacific fog layer: signature Pinot Noir as king on cool slopes — complex reds with red and black fruits, Burgundian finesse and New World depth, long ageing. Ample, tannic Cabernet Sauvignon on warmer, sunnier eastern slopes. Lively, mineral Chardonnay with measured oak ageing, Merlot and Zinfandel as backup (25% each). Rugged terrain between San Francisco and Monterey, a chiselled mountain identity.

The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Reims Mountain

Between Épernay and Reims, a large limestone massif with varied soils and exposure where pinot noir reigns supreme. Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzenay, Verzy, etc., are equivalent to the Burgundian Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée. There are also great Chardonnays, which are rarer (Mailly, Marmery, Trépail, Villers).
