Discovering the wine region of Württemberg

Württemberg is known as Germany's premier red wine region. With almost 11,500 hectares (28,500 acres) of vineyards, it is the fourth-largest wine region in the country. Found adjacent to Baden and South of Franken, Wüttemberg is a particularly hilly and rural wine-region. Almost 70-percent of Württemberg wines are red, predominantly made from Trollinger, SchwarzRiesling and Lemberger.

These red wines tend to be light and Fruity, due to the cool temperatures in this region. While more winemakers are beginning to make higher-alcohol, more heavily extracted examples, the local consumers are well accustomed to the style. While Riesling represents nearly two-thirds of the white wines produced in Württemberg, Müller-Thurgau and Kerner are also traditionally grown here. Riesling from the Village of Flein (which means "Hard pebble") is particularly well regarded.

Württemberg’s main viticultural areas line the Neckar river, and spread up into tributary valleys such as the Rems, Enz, Kocher, Jagst and Tauber. There is also an isolated outcrop of vineyards around Friedrichshafen, on the shores of the Bodensee (Lake Constance). In the North of the region, steep riverside slopes provide the dramatic and labor-intensive landscape on which most Württemberg vines are grown, making use of sunny, south-facing aspects wherever possible. They provide the region with a growing wine tourism industry.

Discover the grape variety: Scheurebe

German grape variety obtained in 1916 by Georg Shere (1879/1949). It was given until then as coming from a cross between Riesling and Sylvaner, but genetic tests have shown that its father is the Bouquettraube (Bukettrebe), and it is closely related to the Kerner. The Scheurebe can be found in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Italy, Slovenia, Great Britain, the United States (California, Virginia, ...), Canada (Ontario, British Columbia, ...), ... practically unknown in France.

Discover the grape variety: Pinot blanc

Pinot Blanc is a grape variety that originated in Burgundy, mutated from Pinot Gris. Today, it is grown in Alsace where it is called klevner when blended with auxerrois. The continental climate, with its cold winters and hot summers, is particularly suited to pinot blanc. It is resistant to frost in winter and in summer, the roots draw the minerals it needs from the warm soil. Its bunches are made up of small berries with thick skins and melting pulp that produce fruity, spicy wines, balanced between acidity and alcohol. pinot blanc is also used for crémants and sparkling wines. Pinot Blanc is also used for Crémant and sparkling wines. It is widely grown in Italy, where it covers almost 7,000 hectares, and is also found in Germany, Austria, Canada and South Africa.

Decanter guide to picnicking for wine lovers

According to lifestyle and happiness guru Gretchen Rubin, you ‘bring your own weather to a picnic’. Ms Rubin, I’d suggest, has never shivered under a tree watching raindrops turn her fish-paste sandwich to mush because the weather forecast was wrong. There are, it’s safe to say, picnics and Picnics. It’s a term that takes in everything from a rubber baguette in a French ‘Aire’ off the Autoroute du Soleil to a four-course spread while listening to opera at Glyndebourne. What’s definitely true is ...

Louis-Fabrice Latour: Obituary

Latour was the 11th generation of his family to lead Maison Louis Latour (and the seventh named Louis Latour). The house of Latour was formally founded in 1797, although the roots go back to the first vineyards purchased in 1731 by Denis Latour. The Latour family originally worked as coopers, and Denis’ son Jean moved to Aloxe-Corton to set up an independent cooperage and later to found Maison Louis Latour, naming the business after his son. The house of Latour remains closely associated with th ...
