Muscat of Alexandria is known under several dozen other names. From Zibibbu di Sicilia to Roman Muscat to Acherfield's early Muscat. Its rich repertoire of appellations comes from its popularity, as consumers prefer it to all other white grapes. Although wine making dates back to the mid-19th century, Wisconsin's wine industry is small and focuses primarily on cold-hardy Hybrid varieties developed specifically for the colder Climates of the Northern half of North America. Valiant, Edelweiss, La Crosse and Frontenac are among the most widely planted varieties in Wisconsin vineyards. Wisconsin covers 170,000 km², between latitudes 42°N and 47°N.

The word of the wine: Tanin

A natural compound contained in the skin of the grape, the seed or the woody part of the bunch, the stalk. The maceration of red wines allows the extraction of tannins, which give the texture, the solidity and also the mellowness when the tannins are "ripe". The winemaker seeks above all to extract the tannins from the skin, the ripest and most noble. The tannins of the seed or stalk, which are "greener", especially in average years, give the wine hardness and astringency. The wines of Bordeaux (based on Cabernet and Merlot) are full of tannins, those of Burgundy much less so, with Pinot Noir containing little.
