Light, juicy reds, low in tannins with crunchy freshness, showing aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, banana (from carbonic maceration) and peony. Easy-drinking style of Beaujolais Nouveau, more structured and mineral on the granites of the ten crus (Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Brouilly). Also in Touraine, Auvergne and Swiss Romande. The wine region of California

Powerful, sunny reds: dense Napa Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrant, chocolate, tobacco, ample tannins), spicy, jammy Zinfandel from the Sierra Foothills, silky red-fruited Pinot Noir on the cool coast (Sonoma, Russian River, Central Coast). Opulent, buttery Chardonnay, notes of yellow fruit and vanilla. Varied climate, from the hot interior to the Pacific-cooled coast. 80% of US production, 139 AVAs including Napa (1st AVA, 1981).

The word of the wine: Final

A more or less lasting impression that is felt in the mouth once the wine has been swallowed (or spat out in the case of a professional tasting). The finish can be short or persistent.
