The wine region of Ahr
Ahr is one of Germany’s least-known and Northernmost wine regions, known for its Pinot Noir reds. It Lies immediately north of the Mosel, and follows the Ahr River in the Final stages of its journey towards its confluence with the Rhein. One might expect a wine region this far north (50°N) to specialize in white wines – like almost every other cool-Climate wine region. After all, neighboring Mosel and Mittelrhein both clearly favor white wines (around 85 percent).

Walls: My top 10 Rhône wines of the year 2021
Of all the columns I’ve written this year, this one should have been the easiest to write: open my tasting notes file, sort by year 2021, sort by score, select the top ten highest scoring wines, copy and paste. Go to the pub. But it’s not that simple. Some wines are technically perfect and undeniably excellent, wines I respect greatly that deserve their high scores – but on a personal level, they leave me a little cold. Walls’ hidden gems: Domaine Richaud, Cairanne
Whenever I visit Domaine Richaud, just outside the village of Cairanne, the winemaking team remind me of friends I made at free parties in the 1990s in fields and disused warehouses. I’m not talking dreadlocks and dogs on strings, but there’s always an anarchic frisson in the air. You get the impression they know how to enjoy themselves. Perhaps it’s to be expected, given the radical furrow Marcel Richaud has ploughed. He’s approaching 70 now, but still thrums with pent-up energy, his ice-blue e ...
Walls: Exploring the wines of L’Euthymie De Sophie
Upon completing her PhD in Risk Management, Sophie Clusel gave up a steady job to dedicate herself to a single hectare of vines in Côte-Rôtie. Now I’m not sure what they teach in the curriculum these days, but it doesn’t strike me as an entirely risk-free decision. But there are several things that are unusual about this new estate. The word of the wine: Shipping (liquor)
In champagne and wines made according to the traditional method, wine is added before corking to fill the void in the bottle created by disgorging. This added wine is often sweetened by sugar incorporated in variable proportions according to the style of wine sought (see dosage). Syn.: liqueur de dosage.
