Discovering the wine region of Pouilles

Puglia (Apulia to many English speakers) is a Long, slender wine region in the extreme Southeast corner of Italy's "boot". To use the shoe analogy often used to illustrate the shape of Italy, Apulia extends from the tip of the heel to the mid-calf, where the spur of the Gargano Peninsula juts out into the Adriatic Sea. The heel (the Salento peninsula) occupies the southern half of the region and is of great importance for the identity of Puglia. Not only are there cultural and geographical differences from Northern Puglia, but the wines are also different.

While the north is slightly more hilly and more linked to the wine-making customs and practices of Central Italy, the south is almost entirely flat and retains a strong link to its Greco-Roman past. The only factor that unites northern and southern Puglia is the choice of crops: olives and grapes, in that order. The region is responsible for almost half of Italy's total olive oil production and has long had a reputation as a prolific source of (mainly red) wine. This has had Serious economic consequences for Puglia's winemakers and for the reputation of the region's wines; when the world began to demand higher quality wines, the mass-produced blended wines in which Puglia specialized lost their value.

Plan to rebuild 15th century wine-trading Newport Ship

Specialists are ready to begin trying to rebuild the medieval Newport Ship, after more than 20 years of conservation work was completed on the merchant vessel’s original timbers, first unearthed in south Wales in 2002. The discovery has also given archaeologists more insight into 15th century lifestyles. It’s believed the Newport Ship ferried wine from Portugal to Britain, most likely into Bristol, among other cargo. Other historical ships have been restored and preserved around the world, but t ...

Napa Valley mourns the passing of Margaret Duckhorn

The eponymous winery started by her and her former husband Dan, Duckhorn Vineyards, was founded in 1976. The brand would be among the first to feature Merlot as more than merely a blending grape. Duckhorn helped ignite America’s love for the grape. Born in New York State, Margaret travelled much throughout her life, growing up in a military family. Her collegiate studies would lead her to Germany where she would discover a love for wine. Upon returning to the US she would complete three degrees ...

The word of the wine: Liquid

Sweet wine containing more than 50 grams of residual sugar per liter. Sweet wines are made from grapes often affected by botrytis cinerea and concentrated either by passerillage (drying of the grapes on the vine stock), or after the harvest (straw wines), or by the cold (ice wines).
